2025 Annual Letter

To Our Clients and Shareholders,

Longevity is the only true audit of a business. As Cardiff navigates its twenty-second year, we do so having survived recessions, inflation shocks, and a global pandemic. Through it all, one truth remains absolute: Betting against the American entrepreneur is a losing strategy.

In 2025, the headlines were defined by noise—geopolitical friction, rate volatility, and prediction models that failed. But the reality on the ground was defined by grit. We saw this firsthand across the 41,000 businesses we served this year. From home services industry to food service and hospitality, the signal was clear: while the pundits debated a “soft landing,” the private sector was busy building the runway.

For decades, the global supply chain was optimized for cost. That era is over. It is now being optimized for security. We are witnessing a structural return to domestic pragmatism. Business owners are shortening supply lines, acquiring hard assets, and insulating themselves from foreign reliance. This is not political rhetoric; it is operational necessity. The strongest balance sheets in our portfolio are no longer the ones with the most cash, but the ones with the most control.

The strongest balance sheets in our portfolio are no longer the ones with the most cash, but the ones with the most control.

Yet, a liquidity gap persists. This is not a failure of capital availability; it is a failure of transmission. The banking system has become calcified. While community banks remain the backbone of Main Street, they are hamstrung by compliance layers that treat a modest small business loan with the same scrutiny as a merger. This results in an average closing time that now exceeds 45 days. This paralysis is expensive. It forces the operator to spend valuable hours navigating compliance rather than driving revenue.

In this new cycle, the market no longer pays for patience; it taxes delay. In our newly released “Cost of Delay” white paper, we modeled the economic impact of the standard bank underwriting cycle. The data showed that for a growing business, the cost of lost opportunity was 4.3x higher than the cost of the capital itself. We saw a stark bifurcation this year: businesses that waited for bank committee approval were left behind by those that executed on “good enough” conditions immediately.

Speed, however, is not recklessness. Growth is easy; profitable growth is hard. In 2025, many lenders exited the space because they confused a bull market for genius. Cardiff remains because we respect the cycle. We operate with a “Fortress Mentality.” This discipline was validated this year by our strategic partnership with Brean Capital, further fortifying a balance sheet built to withstand volatility, not just profit from fair weather.

As we look to 2026, the mandate is clear: Build here. The United States remains the premier jurisdiction on earth for capital formation and innovation. The system works because you work.

We remain rational optimists about the future of this country.

Sincerely,
