Walmart had a strong Tuesday in the market, gaining nearly 2% in after-hours trading and adding close to $18 billion in market value, even as the broader S&P 500 dropped more than 1%. Most of that gain appears tied to a broader investor shift into consumer staples rather than any single company announcement.
Still, Walmart made news on multiple fronts. The company announced it is acquiring Vibe.co, a self-serve connected TV advertising platform with more than 10,000 advertisers, for $1.4 billion. The deal reflects Walmart’s push to grow its advertising business by combining its massive store and online sales data to prove that a streaming ad can actually lead to a purchase, a pitch aimed directly at pulling ad dollars away from Amazon and other competitors.
Walmart also announced its first-ever nuclear power purchase, locking in roughly 176 megawatts of clean energy through two 15-year agreements with Constellation Energy, set to begin in 2029 and 2030 to power a future Illinois distribution center. The deals signal Walmart’s long-term commitment to affordable and reliable energy as it continues expanding its physical footprint.
Meanwhile, the retail price war is in full swing this week, with Amazon’s four-day Prime Day event running alongside Walmart’s week-long sale and Target’s competing promotion all happening simultaneously and all chasing the same pool of budget-conscious shoppers.
The Cardiff Connection
Cardiff’s Founder, William Stern, observed that when multiple major retailers are running competing promotions at the same time, shoppers don’t become more loyal. They become more ruthless about price. That insight reflects what Cardiff sees in the spending behavior of everyday consumers, and it carries real implications for the small businesses Cardiff finances.
When big-box retailers compete purely on price, smaller operators feel the pressure to match discounts they can’t always afford. Cardiff works with those businesses to ensure they have the working capital to stay competitive during high-pressure retail moments rather than getting squeezed out when it matters most.
